scholar by the name of Walter Martin to write a book on Seventh-day Adventists. Martin served on the staff of Eternity magazine as its consulting editor on cults and had already published his Jehovah of the Watchtower in 1953 and had nearly completed a manuscript that would later be published as The Rise of the Cults.3 In the spring of 1955, Martin, who had read the correspondence between Unruh and Barnhouse, contacted Unruh and requested “face-to-face contact with representative Seventh-day Adventists.”
